Heel Spurs
By Todd Schafer
It's not really about the heel spur. Patients often ask me, don't you need to take out the heel spur? Will the heel spur still be there after your treatment? I tell them that heel spurs are not the cause of pain, it is the pulling of the ligament, the plantar fascia, that causes the pain. With every step you take, that ligament is being stretched and this can cause tiny little tears and inflammation. If the spur were closer to the skin, it might cause a problem. It is not. It is protected by a pretty healthy layer of fat. This plantar fat pad is normal, and helps to protect us while walking and bearing weight. So, the spur remains and the pain does not. This is a good thing as the surgical correction to remove a heel spur causes a much longer recuperation time than leaving it alone. Sometimes, the ligament needs to be released; and this can be done endoscopically with a very small incision. |
