Bob Newhart and his three incarnations
By Todd Schafer
When I was a kid growing up, my favorite television show by far was The Bob Newhart Show. Still, to this day, it remains my favorite sitcom of all time. Bob Newhart is known for his dry delivery. His dead-pan, no frills approach to comedy always appealed to me. As a matter of fact, I taped with my little Panasonic tape recorder, all of his shows. This was before the days of even VCR's! I also appreciated that he never relied on vulgarity to get his comedic point across. Of course, he was well supported by an excellent cast. Bill Dailey as the inept but lovable neighbor, and Jerry the dentist could be counted on every episode. Probably the most famous character was Mr Carlin, a mean spirited patient who reveled in poking fun and humiliating the other patients (most notably Emil Peterson). Most importantly, I always thought that if a normal, balding looking guy like Newhart could bag an absolute babe of a wife like Suzanne Pleshette, that there would be hope for guys the likes of me. His second series, simply entitled Newhart, I never got into that much. It did have, perhaps, the most imaginative series finale of all time, where Bob wakes up and utters to his wife about this dream he had where he was an inn-keeper in Vermont. His final TV show, I think I watched once. It fared not nearly as well as the first two. |
